What is Barrel Firing?

Barrel firing is a low-temperature, atmospheric pottery technique (often below 815∘C) in which bisqueware is fired in a metal drum filled with combustibles such as sawdust, wood, seaweed, and chemicals (copper, salt) to produce unique, smoky, and unpredictable surface colours. It acts as a controlled, portable alternative to pit firing, typically lasting 1-2 hours for the burn plus cooling time, resulting in decorative, non-waterproof wares.
